Das Rhein-Indus Global Forum e.V. organisiert die Vortrags- und Diskussionsreihe Cutural Encounters Between East & West: Series of Lectures and Discussions zu kulturellen Begegnungen zwischen Ost und West. Am 12. Mai 2024 referiert Prof. Dr. Aslam Syed zu einem historischen Treffen zwischen Goethe und Napoleon im Austausch über den Islam. Der Vortrag wird auf Englisch gehalten. Breakfast at Erfurt: Goethe, Napoleon and Muhammad
Napoleon invited Goethe to the Governor House at Erfurt in October 1808, apparently to meet the author of ‚Sorrows of Young Werther‘. This brief encounter, however, turned into a discussion on the French author, Voltaire’s depiction of Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam. Prof. Syed will explore the perceptions of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad during this period through the prism of the conversations between these two giants in their respective fields.
Napoleon lud Goethe im Oktober 1808 in das Gouverneurshaus in Erfurt ein, um den Autor von „Die Leiden des jungen Werther“ zu treffen. Diese kurze Begegnung entwickelte sich zu einer Diskussion über Voltaires Darstellung von Mohammed, dem Propheten des Islam. Prof. Syed wird die Wahrnehmung des Islam und des Propheten Mohammed in dieser Zeit anhand der Gespräche zwischen diesen beiden historischen Persönlichkeiten untersuchen.
